The Foundation Trust is pleased to announce the inaugural Complex Trauma Summer Training Institute, taking place in Hyannis, MA from July 21-25, 2025. This weeklong conference will offer a range of clinical workshops for therapists and allied multidisciplinary providers. It will feature members of the Foundation Trust’s Complex Trauma Treatment Affiliates program, including the Foundation Trust’s Executive Director, Joseph Spinazzola, Ph.D., and senior training faculty members, Jana Pressley Psy.D. and Kaitlyn Marie Wilson, LICSW.
The Summer Institute will showcase training on the neurobiological effects of complex trauma on developing brains and bodies by Wendy D’Andrea, Ph.D., Associate Professor at the New School of Social Research, arguably this century’s leading clinical researcher in the field of complex traumatic stress. The Institute will conclude with a workshop on expressive arts in complex trauma intervention by Eliana Gil, Ph.D., RPT-S, ATR, whose groundbreaking work on the use of play therapy in the assessment and treatment of child sexual abuse has guided the field for the past five decades.
The Institute’s offerings span assessment and treatment of complex trauma in children and adults, with emphasis on innovative approaches to intervention with challenging clinical dilemmas and conditions. Special topics include treatment of dissociative identity disorder, trauma-informed care for LGBTQ+ youth, early intervention, supporting parents contending with their own unresolved trauma histories, and the transformative power of play.
The launch of this annual event has been lauded by leading figures in the field. Dr. Julian Ford, Director of the Center for the Treatment of Developmental Trauma Disorders at University of Connecticut Medical Center and internationally renowned scholar in the field of posttraumatic stress, extols “The Summer Training Institute has a unique blend of science and clinical practice with exceptional trainers who are leading experts in the complex trauma field as well as dynamic and engaging presenters who will make the material truly come to life.”
This exclusively in-person conference is designed to balance intensive, experiential learning with extensive opportunities for interaction with peers and faculty. Enrollment is limited to 100 participants to invite a more intimate and personalized learning experience.
Notably, the Institute has been designed to be of value to therapists and non-therapists alike. Explains Reverend Liz Walker, Founding Director of Can We Talk…® a nationwide collective of community based, clinically supported programs addressing the epidemic of posttraumatic stress in urban neighborhoods, “As a lay person who first learned about the complexity of trauma through a training program presented by the same individuals who will present this one, I know first-hand the holistic benefits of what you will experience in the Summer Training Institute. The information you will gather, the people you will meet, and the spirit of the work you will do in Hyannis, will enhance and deepen, in extraordinary ways, your approaches in healing an increasingly wounded world.”
This member-initiative of the Foundation Trust’s Complex Trauma Treatment Affiliates program is being offered through the Complex Trauma Institute, LLC, in partnership with Richmont Graduate University.
The Complex Trauma Treatment Affiliates program is sponsored by the Foundation Trust, a private operating foundation committed to dual missions – to improve understanding and response to complex trauma and adversity worldwide, and to uplift vulnerable and underrepresented communities.
