FOUNDATION TRUST OFFERS FREE TRAINING WORKSHOPS ON COMPLEX TRAUMA AT MEDFORD PUBLIC LIBRARY
Through its annual Speaker Series, the Foundation Trust is excited to invite community members to three free training events on the effects of childhood trauma and approaches to intervention. The events will take place on Friday, October 27th, Friday, November 17th, and Monday, December 11th from 9:30am-5pm each day at the Medford Public Library 2nd floor, 111 High Street in Medford. Lunch and refreshments will be provided.
Each community training will feature 3 different modules of the new national curriculum of the Complex Trauma Training Consortium (CTTC). Trainings will be presented by experts in the field of complex trauma – Kaityln Wilson, LISCW, Dr. Jana Pressley, Psy.D., and Dr. Joseph Spinazzola, Ph.D.
Complex Trauma is the exposure to multiple forms of traumatic experiences and the evolving difficulties that arise as a result of adapting to or surviving these experiences such as health problems, high-risk coping behaviors, substance use, and revictimization. The 2023 Foundation Trust Speakers Series community training events will offer expertise in complex trauma understanding, assessment, and multidisciplinary response to anyone impacted by or interested in learning more about complex trauma.
“By bringing our national training curriculum to our community, we hope to equip local mental health providers, educators, child welfare and juvenile justice personnel, law enforcement, clergy, parents, and other social service providers with the tools to understand the needs of children, families, and communities impacted by trauma and life adversity, and to respond in ways that are compassionate, evidence-based, and effective,” says Dr. Joseph Spinazzola, Executive Director of the Foundation Trust and renowned expert in the field of traumatic stress.
Gabriella Snyder Stelmack, Executive Director of Bread of Life shared, “Earlier this year, Bread of Life worked with the Foundation Trust to provide a complex trauma training for our volunteers and staff. The feedback I got was very positive. Learning about complex trauma-informed care has helped us better understand each other and those we serve, and respond in more compassionate and effective ways. I highly recommend the training.”
“I’ve seen first-hand how complex trauma can impact a family for generations,” says Crystal Johnson, Executive Director of the Melrose Alliance Against Violence, and Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker. “For individuals and families who have experienced domestic violence, the effects of complex trauma can be especially devastating. In order to better support those impacted, it is important for providers to receive specialized training in trauma-informed care. This type of training can help providers understand the unique needs of survivors of domestic violence and how to best support their recovery. By increasing access to trauma-informed care, we can help survivors build resilience and improve their overall health and well-being.”
The Speaker Series will also be an opportunity to visit the Spinazzola Family Counseling Room, a dedicated space in the stunning, new Medford Public Library that can be utilized by area social workers, psychologists, and related professionals to meet community-based counseling needs.
The first training event on Friday, October 27th features workshops on trauma assessment and treatment options, as well as provider strategies to overcome bias. The second event on Friday, November 17th will examine the effects of complex trauma on neurobiology, substance abuse, and parenting. The final event on Monday, December 11th will explore the wide-ranging impact of complex trauma, the role of pharmacotherapy in treatment, and strategies to support learning and classroom engagement of trauma-exposed youth.
