Acute Stress Disorder

A diagnosis added to the 4th edition of the DSM to account for short-term condition that may emerge in the aftermath of an acute trauma such as a car accident, assault or natural disaster. Symptoms include posttraumatic stress and dissociation. Symptoms frequently resolve on their own or following brief treatment with therapy or medication. If symptoms persist for more than 30 days, diagnosis is typically changed to PTSD.
