Betrayal Trauma

An empirically-supported theory originated by Dr. Jennifer Freyd. Refers to trauma perpetrated against children by primary caregivers or other adults upon whom the child depends for support and survival. Linked to greater complexity of outcomes, including dissociation and negative self-image, relationships and world-view. Has evolved to include betrayal by institutions on which an adult is dependent, including colleges, universities, workplaces, religious organizations the military.
