Compassion Fatigue

A term originated in the early 1990’s to describe signs of burnout observed in emergency department nurses, including emotional distress, anger, somatic complaints, hopelessness, apathy and emotional detachment. Co-opted shortly thereafter by the traumatic stress field and often used interchangeably with vicarious traumatization.
