Emotion Regulation
The ability to feel, adjust and appropriately share one’s full range of feelings. Comprised of a number of specific abilities related to emotion management, including noticing, differentiating and labelling; sitting with and tolerating; activating and suppressing; understanding situational precipitants, associated thoughts and body reactions; increasing or decreasing intensity; and expressing and communicating feelings. Often compromised by exposure to early, chronic or severe intepersonal abuse or neglect. Considered a primary focus of complex trauma therapy with children and adults.
