Limbic System

Brain region central to the activation and control of emotions, basic human drives, and survival behaviors, as well as the recording, storage and retrieval of memories. Includes several brain structures of high relevance to traumatic stress, including the amygdala and hippocampus. Communication between this brain region and the prefrontal cortex, necessary for the cognitive control of strong emotions and impulses, routinely breaks down in the face of trauma.
