Distress occurring during or in the immediate aftermath of a traumatic event, including cognitive, emotional, physiological, and behavioral responses. Involves appraisal of the threat and degree to which coping resources are exceeded. The severity of peritraumatic reactions are often connected to severity of posttraumatic sequelae and long-term prognosis.
