Race-Based Traumatic Stress

A term formulated to acknowledge racial discrimination as a distinctive type of stressor that can lead to trauma-related symptoms. Noted Columbia University psychologist Dr. Robert Carter and his colleagues coined this term as part of a theoretical model for understanding the emotional injury associated with racial discrimination. Ongoing research on this construct has demonstrated significant outcomes correlating racial discrimination with chronic depression and anxiety, along with classic symptoms of PTSD.
