Secondary Victimization

The first term in the traumatic stress field to address susceptibility to burnout and emergence of trauma-related symptoms in family members, intimate others or providers who are empathically connected to trauma victims. Originated by Dr. Charles Figley in the treatment of war veterans and their families. This term has since fallen into disuse, supplanted by three more popular constructs: secondary trauma, vicarious trauma and compassion fatigue.
